Culturama is one of the main summer events in Nevis. It is a good time to visit, and it is also a period when roads, restaurants, hotels, taxis, water taxis and event areas get busier than usual. What is Nevis Culturama?
Culturama is the annual cultural festival of Nevis. It celebrates Nevisian music, pageantry, folklore, food, performance and community, and it runs around the Emancipation holiday at the start of August. Activity builds over a couple of weeks and tends to peak in the first few days of August.
The festival dates back to 1974, when it was created to keep Nevisian folk traditions alive around the August Emancipation weekend. It has run every summer since, which makes it one of the longer-standing cultural festivals in the Caribbean. That history shows in the programme: alongside the soca and the street parties you will find masquerades, string band music, folk dance and storytelling that belong to Nevis rather than being imported from larger carnivals.
It is a local event first. Nevisians, returning nationals and visitors all take part, and the calendar mixes serious competition with street celebration. The Nevis Tourism Authority describes it as a festival of colourful parades, live music, competitions, history and island culture.

What to expect during Culturama
Culturama has a different pace from a normal week in Nevis. Some events start early in the morning, some run late into the night, and the busiest days bring more traffic into Charlestown and the main event areas.
If you are staying outside town, especially at a villa or a hillside property, it is better to arrange your return transport before you head out.

Culturama is a programme of events rather than a single day, and it tends to build over the festival period. Here is a rough sense of how it usually flows:

Getting to Nevis during Culturama
Most international visitors reach Nevis through St. Kitts Airport (SKB). That usually means an airport pickup, a short road transfer to the pier, a water taxi across The Narrows, and a Nevis-side pickup for the final drive to your hotel, villa or guesthouse.
During Culturama it helps to have these hand-offs arranged in advance, especially if you land close to an evening event.

Two other ways in: some regional flights land directly at Vance W. Amory International Airport on Nevis itself, which leaves a short drive to most hotels – ask us about onward transport when you book. Getting around Nevis during Culturama
Getting to an event is only half the plan. The return journey matters too, especially after evening shows or if you are staying away from Charlestown. Parking near the main venues can be tight on the busy nights, and taxis get stretched, so last-minute transport is harder to find than usual.
If you are at Four Seasons, Oualie, Hamilton Beach, Montpelier, Golden Rock, The Hermitage, Paradise Beach, Mount Nevis or a private villa, your pickup timing will vary by location. Larger groups should book ahead, and anyone flying home mid-festival should plan their airport departure timing carefully.

Closest to the events
Closer to many events and an easy run for shorter transfers. Four Seasons, Hamilton Beach and Paradise Beach sit along Pinney’s.

Near the water taxi
Useful if you are arriving and leaving by water taxi, and handy for the northern end of the island.
Gingerland, Montpelier, Golden Rock and The Hermitage
Hillside and quieter

Good for families and groups. Transport is worth booking early, as villas are often set back from the main roads.

Culturama fills the evenings, but the days are yours.
