St. Kitts and Nevis in Winter: What to Expect in December

December is one of the busiest tourist months on Nevis and St. Kitts. Here is the short version of what to expect, plus a few practical notes for travellers planning a December trip.

December weather

Sugar Mas (St. Kitts Carnival)

Sugar Mas runs from mid-December through early January. Street parades, steel pan and calypso competitions, and the J Ouvert Parade in the early hours of Carnival Monday. Mostly on St. Kitts; some travellers cross from Nevis for a day or two.

Christmas on the islands

Hotels run Christmas dinners and beachside parties. Most resorts decorate from late November. The Four Seasons puts on a New Year Eve fireworks display that draws a crowd to Pinney Beach.

Outdoor days

December weather suits the full activity menu: hiking Mount Liamuiga (St. Kitts) and Nevis Peak; snorkelling, fishing, catamaran day-trips; cycling.

Food

Fresh-caught lobster, conch and mahi-mahi. Hotel restaurants set Christmas menus; beach bars stay informal. Pair with a rum punch or fresh coconut water.
