Sugar Mas 55: How to Experience St Kitts Carnival While Staying on Nevis
Sugar Mas is the St Kitts and Nevis National Carnival, and one of the biggest events of the year in the Federation. It takes place on St Kitts, mostly in and around Basseterre, across Christmas and New Year. The 55th edition, Sugar Mas 55, runs from Friday 11 December 2026 to Saturday 2 January 2027 under the slogan “The Ultimate Vibe! It’s Sugar Mas 55”.
Staying on Nevis does not mean missing it. It does mean planning, because the Carnival is across the water and some of the best moments start before dawn or finish late at night. This guide picks out the main events, explains what to expect, and sets out how to get there and back from Nevis.
About the dates: the dates below come from the National Carnival Committee’s Sugar Mas 55 calendar, released in June 2026 and revised in July, as reported by WIC News. When we checked on 19 October 2026, start times, venues for most events and ticket details had not yet been published. Check the committee’s official Carnival website and social media channels before you travel.
What is Sugar Mas?
Sugar Mas, its name a nod to St Kitts’ sugar-cane past, is a season rather than a single day. Over three weeks it brings calypso and soca competitions, pageants, the Panorama steel-pan contest, folklore, the early-morning J’ouvert, a Grand Parade of costumed troupes on New Year’s Day and a final street party, Last Lap, on 2 January. Promoters also run a busy programme of private fetes, brunches and boat parties alongside the official events.
Sugar Mas is organised by the St Kitts and Nevis National Carnival Committee and is a St Kitts event. Nevis has its own summer festival, Culturama, which takes place around the start of August.
Sugar Mas 55: key dates
The main Carnival period runs from the official opening on 11 December 2026 to Last Lap on 2 January 2027. These are some of the national events on the committee’s calendar:
- Friday 11 December: Opening of Carnival Village, “Midnight Escape”
- Friday 18 December: Soca Monarch Finals
- Tuesday 22 December: Miss SKN Queen Pageant
- Saturday 26 December: J’ouvert
- Sunday 27 December: Panorama
- Tuesday 29 December: Senior Calypso Finals
- Wednesday 30 December: Junior Carnival
- Friday 1 January 2027: Grand Parade
- Saturday 2 January 2027: Last Lap
Some competition rounds take place before the official opening. The Senior Calypso eliminations are listed for 20 and 21 November and the Soca Monarch eliminations for 27 November, with “In the Spirit of Christmas” events from 7 to 10 December. These are mainly of interest to visitors already on the islands in late November or early December.
Private fetes, brunches and boat rides run from late November to 3 January. They are organised by independent promoters, each with their own tickets, times and terms, so check directly with the promoter.
What to expect at the main events
J’ouvert: Saturday 26 December
J’ouvert means “daybreak”, and that is when it happens. Bands and music trucks take to the streets of Basseterre in the dark, and revellers follow them through the town until the morning heat builds. It is loud, crowded and joyful. Wear old clothes and shoes you do not mind spoiling, and keep your phone in a waterproof pouch. The start time for Sugar Mas 55 had not been announced when we checked.
Grand Parade: Friday 1 January
New Year’s Day belongs to the costumed troupes. Masquerade bands, folklore groups and moko jumbies on stilts make their way through Basseterre over a long day. For most visitors from Nevis this is the easiest big event to see, because it runs in daylight. Watching from the roadside is free; popular spots fill up early, so bring water, sun protection and patience.
Last Lap: Saturday 2 January
Last Lap is the final street party of the season, with music trucks and crowds on the road one last time. 2 January is also Carnival Day, a public holiday in St Kitts and Nevis.
Shows and competitions
The Soca Monarch Finals, Calypso Finals, Panorama and the pageants are staged shows. Carnival Village in Basseterre is the main stage area, though the committee had not confirmed venues for every show when we checked. They are usually evening events, which matters if you need to get back to Nevis the same night. Ticket details for Sugar Mas 55 had not been published when we checked; buy only through official committee channels or the named promoter.
Getting to Sugar Mas from Nevis
There are two quite different ways across, and the difference matters during Carnival.
- The public ferry, Charlestown to Basseterre: the passenger ferry runs between Charlestown on Nevis and the ferry terminal in Basseterre, close to the Carnival action. It runs to a fixed timetable published by the Nevis Air and Sea Ports Authority (NASPA ferry schedule), and tickets are normally bought at the terminal. Our Nevis ferry schedule guide explains how it works.
- Water taxis across The Narrows: water taxis cross the short channel between the Oualie area on Nevis and Reggae Beach at Cockleshell Bay, on St Kitts’ Southeast Peninsula. The crossing takes around 6 to 10 minutes, but it lands you on the peninsula, not in Basseterre. You then need road transport into town, around 25 to 30 minutes in normal traffic and longer on Carnival days. See our Reggae Beach water taxi guide and our Oualie guide.

Do not assume the normal ferry or water-taxi timetables will suit Carnival events, or that extra sailings will run. We found no special Carnival sailings for Sugar Mas 55 in the operator and port-authority sources we checked on 19 October 2026, but that does not rule them out. 26 December (Boxing Day), 1 January and 2 January (Carnival Day) are all public holidays, so check the schedule for the exact date you plan to travel, close to the day, and confirm any special sailings directly with the operator. For a side-by-side look at the options, read how to get from St Kitts to Nevis.
Early starts: J’ouvert
J’ouvert is the hardest event to reach from Nevis. To be on the road at the start you would need to cross in the middle of the night, and published ferry and water-taxi timetables are not built around that. The simplest option is to stay in or near Basseterre on the night of 25 December. Christmas night is busy, so book a room early.
Late nights: shows and fetes
Evening shows and fetes may finish after the last scheduled boat of the day. Before you go, check the last sailing back on that date and decide whether you will leave early, stay overnight on St Kitts, or arrange private transport in advance. A night crossing is never guaranteed: it depends on sea conditions and on an operator being available.
Daytime road events: Grand Parade and Last Lap
These are more manageable as a day trip, but boats, terminals and roads will be busier than usual. Travel over early, and plan to be back at the terminal or pier well before your last option home, allowing for queues on the way back.
Crowds, road closures and meeting points
- Expect road closures. Streets on the J’ouvert and parade routes close to traffic, with diversions around central Basseterre. The police publish traffic arrangements before each road event, usually shortly beforehand, and SKNIS, the government information service, carries them. Routes for Sugar Mas 55 had not been published when we checked.
- Agree a pickup point outside the route. Taxis cannot reach closed streets. Choose a meeting place a few blocks away from the route and agree the fare before you set off.
- Pick a fixed meeting point for your group. In a dense crowd it is easy to get separated and hard to hear a phone. Agree a landmark and a time before you join the road.
- Allow plenty of time for the return. Work back from your last boat home: walking out of the crowd, finding a taxi and, if you crossed by water taxi, the drive back to Reggae Beach can all take far longer than usual.
- Travel light. Carry some EC dollars in small notes, photo ID, water and sun protection, and leave valuables at your hotel.
Private arrangements
Book Nevis does not run scheduled Carnival transfers or overnight crossings. If your group would like a private arrangement, such as road transport on St Kitts combined with a private water taxi, contact us well before your dates. Whether we can help depends on supplier availability, timings and sea conditions, and nothing is in place until we have confirmed it with you in advance.
Please book your transfer at least 48 hours before your scheduled transfer. Advance booking is required; same-day arrangements are not available. Late December is one of the busiest weeks of the year for water taxis, so the earlier you ask, the better.
Plan your Sugar Mas trip
Choose your events first, then work out the crossing. Daytime road events such as the Grand Parade may suit a day trip, provided your outward and return transport is confirmed; J’ouvert and the evening shows are better with a night on St Kitts. If you are still planning your holiday, our notes on St Kitts and Nevis in December and our guide on how to get to Nevis may help.
Event dates are based on WIC News’s reporting of the committee’s revised calendar, checked on 19 October 2026.
